Chinoiserie is Europe's reading of Chinese decorative art, and it has never really gone out of fashion. Blossom branches, cranes and herons, pagodas and painted ink landscapes, all drawn with the loose hand of something painted rather than printed.
Look for Chinoiserie Garden by Sandberg, Cheng Toile by Thibaut, Lingering Garden by York Wallcoverings and Summer Palace by Laura Ashley, from a fine blossom trail to a full painted panorama.
The palest versions read almost as a plain from across a room. The deeper grounds, in ink blue, black or gold, turn a hallway or a dining room into an occasion.
