The story

A family of makers

In 1886 Richard Thibaut began selling wallcoverings from a horse-drawn cart in New York. One hundred and forty years on, the house he founded is the oldest continuously operating wallpaper company in America, and it has gathered two very different siblings around it.

Anna French began in 1976 in a disused Victorian lace mill in Scotland, and brings an English lightness of hand to the family. Coraggio is the group's luxury capsule: woven fabrics and natural wallcoverings in silk, mohair, wool, linen and grasscloth, made for rooms where texture does the talking. Here, for the first time, you can browse all three side by side.

The luxury capsule

Coraggio

Coraggio is where the group keeps its most tactile work. Silk and mohair, wool, slubbed linen and airy sheers sit beside wallcoverings of grasscloth, paperweave and woven texture, in a quiet palette of ivory, stone, charcoal and cognac. It is decoration you notice with the hand before the eye.

The Coraggio x Thomas Lavin collection takes the same restraint somewhere deeper and more architectural, in hemlock, rosewood and charcoal.

Pattern with an American accent

Thibaut

Everything Thibaut makes is still drawn by its own in-house studio, and the range moves with real confidence from crisp botanicals and preppy stripes to handsome grasscloths, chinoiserie and sunny geometrics. Many designs come as both wallpaper and fabric, so a whole room comes together with remarkable ease.

Its papers have hung in the White House and on the set of Forrest Gump, and this year the house marks its one hundred and fortieth.

The romance of the fine line

Anna French

Anna French began with lace, made in a Victorian mill in Scotland, and that fineness has never left the work. Its wallpapers and fabrics are the fine leaf trail, the sprigged floral, the toile and the botanical drawn with a botanist's patience: papers that let the light in rather than swallowing it.

Within the Thibaut family it is the romantic, the one with the English accent, and collections such as Clermont, Bristol and Devon show the house at its most assured.
