Mark Alexander Fabric
Mark Alexander is one of the houses of the Romo Group, the British, family-run textile business founded in 1902 and now in its fifth generation. Where its siblings cover bold colour and contemporary print, Mark Alexander occupies the calmest corner of the family: naturally beautiful fabrics, restrained rather than loud, in a mellow, earthy palette chosen to flatter natural fibres.
The newest arrivals centre on the Homespun family. Homespun Textures draws on the legacy of South American textiles, from the slubby linen and wool plain of Homespun to the banded geometry of Pallay. Homespun Embroideries includes Boro, a fine chequered grid in homage to Japanese patchwork, and Homespun Sheers brings real texture to a sheer, for a window that wants softening rather than covering. Alongside them sit two new plains, Canapa Cloth in pure hemp and Gaia in linen and wool, while Veranda III is woven in solution-dyed acrylic for indoor and outdoor use, on a terrace or in a garden room.
Luxury yarns run through the rest of the range. Jazz III is woven in the UK from couture quality wool and spun silk, with a drape that is hard to match, and the same spun silk appears in the jacquards Rivulet and Meiro. Town III is a lambswool satin, also woven in the UK and inherently fire retardant, so it suits contract settings as well as the home. For velvet, Plush II is densely woven in long pile mohair and Silken in silk and mohair.
Rhythm takes its cue from the forms of West African textiles in linen embroideries and weaves, and the sheers Solitude and Cirrus gently diffuse the light, while Lustre Reversible and Engawa give two looks from a single cloth.
