Jacquard Fabric
Jacquard fabric weaves the pattern into the cloth rather than printing it on top. The design is built thread by thread on the loom, which gives it its own texture, a satisfying weight and a pattern that reads on both the colour and the surface. Jacquard has long been the home of damasks and formal florals, though contemporary geometrics suit it just as well. Because the pattern is part of the weave, it catches the light differently as you move around a room.
Clarke & Clarke offers woven designs in Diffusion and Expressions. Harlequin includes jacquards in Zamora and Paloma, and Black Edition brings a more opulent mood with Istoria. For classic woven patterns, look at Coordonné and its Damaskus and Verdure 16th collections, and at Romo for Otillo.
The woven structure tends to give jacquards good body, so they often suit upholstery, cushions and headboards as well as curtains. Weight and rub test results vary from design to design, so check the product details for recommended use. Where a pattern is large, allow for the repeat when working out how much to order.
