The Romo Group

The Romo Group

The Romo Group brings six British houses together, from Romo itself and the quiet luxury of Mark Alexander to the bolder worlds of Black Edition, Zinc Textile, Villa Nova and Kirkby Design.

The story

A family firm

Romo takes its name from Robert Mould, who founded the company in 1902. More than a century and two world wars later it is still owned and run by his family, now in its fifth generation: a proper family firm in an industry steadily gathered up into conglomerates.

From that one name has grown a family of six houses, each with its own character but all sharing the same instinct for quality: Romo, the flagship; Mark Alexander, the calmest and most natural; Black Edition, the experimental; Zinc Textile, the urban; Villa Nova, the youthful; and Kirkby Design, the graphic one.

The decorator's secret

Romo

Ask an interior designer about Romo and you notice they almost all use it, and speak of it with the trust reserved for something dependable.

It has spent more than a century mastering the essentials: sumptuous velvets, tactile weaves, refined prints and hardworking plains, in a library broad enough to furnish an entire home.

Quiet luxury

Mark Alexander

Mark Alexander occupies the calmest and most sophisticated corner of the family: naturally beautiful fabrics and wallcoverings, restrained rather than loud, that treat a wall as something to be sensed as much as seen.

The studio works in genuinely natural fibres, from handwoven grasscloths and Japanese paper weaves to wool, silk, mohair and linen, in soft neutrals and earthy tones.

The best rooms are often the ones you feel before you notice. Mark Alexander decorates for exactly that moment.

From Decorating Notes The Quiet Luxury of a Bare Wall: Decorating with Mark Alexander In a world of ever busier walls, Mark Alexander makes the opposite argument. Its wallcoverings are woven from grass, silk and paper, and their whole appeal is that you feel them before you notice them. Read the story

The experimental side

Black Edition

The more experimental side of the Romo Group, Black Edition takes a bolder, more artistic approach to design, drawing on modern art, Japanese printmaking, folk embroidery and twentieth-century fashion.

The result is decadent velvets, tactile jacquards, embroidered linens and shimmering metallics, in a consistently distinctive palette that rewards a closer look.

Urban glamour

Zinc Textile

Launched in 2010 and inspired by the heady heights of 1970s style, Zinc Textile has its own distinctly urban personality within the family.

Its collections play out in a largely monochrome palette lifted by vibrant accents and signature metallics, with innovative weaves and luxe finishes that never play it safe.

Youthful and versatile

Villa Nova

Founded in 1993, Villa Nova is the youthful branch of the family, designing contemporary prints, decorative weaves, sheers and plains made to work together across collections.

Its wallpapers sit in a calm, chalky palette, from botanicals and warm textures to a collaboration with the artist Kyra Cane.

Graphic and hard-working

Kirkby Design

Kirkby Design brings a graphic, architectural edge to the group, with fabrics built for hard-working interiors as well as homes, many of them flame retardant.

Its collections include Underground, drawn from the seat moquettes of London's transport network, and two collaborations with Eley Kishimoto.
