Chinoiserie Wallpaper

Chinoiserie Wallpaper

Chinoiserie is Europe's reading of Chinese decorative art, and it has never really gone out of fashion. Blossom branches, cranes and herons, pagodas and painted ink landscapes, all drawn with the loose hand of something painted rather than printed.

Look for Chinoiserie Garden by Sandberg, Cheng Toile by Thibaut, Lingering Garden by York Wallcoverings and Summer Palace by Laura Ashley, from a fine blossom trail to a full painted panorama.

The palest versions read almost as a plain from across a room. The deeper grounds, in ink blue, black or gold, turn a hallway or a dining room into an occasion.

How many rolls do I need?

Use the wallpaper calculator, or "How many rolls do I need?" on any product page, which allows for the pattern repeat. Order all your rolls together so they come from the same batch.

Can I order a sample?

Yes. Most papers have a sample, usually A4, and up to 6 samples are delivered free. A sample is the best way to check colour and texture in your own room.

Why does the batch number matter?

Rolls from different production batches can vary slightly in shade. Rolls ordered together always come from one batch; if you're topping up an earlier order, add its batch number on the product page and we'll match it.

Can I return wallpaper?

Most unused rolls can be returned: tell us within 14 days of delivery and send them back within 30. Some brands charge a 25% restocking fee on returns made after 14 days. Papers that are printed or made to order, and murals, can't be returned. Each product page tells you which applies.

How long will delivery take?

Every product page shows its own delivery time and an estimated arrival date. Delivery is free on UK mainland orders over £90; Northern Ireland, the Highlands and islands are charged at checkout.

Do you offer trade accounts?

Yes, for interior designers, decorators and commercial projects. Find out about trade accounts.

Chinoiserie Wallpaper

Chinoiserie is Europe's reading of Chinese decorative art, and it has never really gone out of fashion. Blossom branches, cranes and herons, pheasants, pagodas and painted ink landscapes, all drawn with the loose hand of something painted rather than printed. The palest versions read almost as texture from across a room, while deeper backgrounds in ink blue, black or gold turn a hallway or a dining room into an occasion.

Sandberg's Chinoiserie Garden is inspired by an embroidered silk chinoiserie over a century old, and is decorative and atmospheric. Coordonné's Forbidden City is richly detailed: Yu Garden is inspired by the classical gardens of Shanghai, and Sacred Pheasants sets Chinese pheasants among flowering branches. Their Random Chinoiseries II takes the style to full panoramas.

Thibaut's Dynasty collection includes Asian Scenic, with pavilions and willows set among rocks and water, and York Wallcoverings' Tea Garden has Sprig & Heron, with graceful birds flying between stylised bonsai trees. Today Interiors' Chinoiserie collection is devoted to the style.

For a whole wall of scenery, see our chinoiserie murals, or carry the look onto curtains and cushions with chinoiserie fabric. Chinoiserie also sits happily beside toile and Asian influence designs. Read Introducing Coordonné for more on one of its great modern interpreters.
