Ticking Stripe Wallpaper
A ticking stripe is the narrow, slightly irregular stripe borrowed from old mattress cloth, and it is one of the most useful patterns there is. Quiet enough to read almost as a plain from across a room, it gives a wall a crisp, homely structure. It is perfect in a bedroom, a boot room or above painted panelling.
Galerie's Pretty Prints includes a timeless grey and white ticking stripe, and their Smart Stripes 3 adds a subtle herringbone weave beneath the lines. Ohpopsi's Simply Stripes draws its ticking from cotton and linen fabrics, with broad stripes lined in small dots. Colefax and Fowler's Chartworth has Tealby Stripe, a mid-scale stripe with ticking-style detailing and an appealing print texture.
There is plenty of colour too. Thibaut's Stripes and Checks Resource and Greenwood collections set narrow bands in the plain rhythm of a ticking cloth, and Anna French's Clermont includes the refined Payton Stripe. Mulberry Home's Garden Party has Marquee Stripe, made to partner statement prints, and Coordonné's Feria takes its rhythm from festival awnings and ticking.
Ticking belongs with the wider striped wallpaper collection and with gingham wallpaper, its country companion. For a bolder band, see modern striped wallpaper. Our Decorating Notes piece The Dream of the Cottage: Country Wallpaper shows how it fits a cottage scheme.
