Semi-Plain Fabric
Semi-plain fabric carries just enough movement to lift a scheme without competing with it. Subtle textures, tonal weaves, slubs and small stripes read as plain from across the room and reveal their character up close, which makes them wonderfully easy to layer with pattern.
Villa Nova do this beautifully in the Morandi Fabric Collection, where Albers is a richly woven semi-plain with subtle tonal movement and Kahlo pairs a textured weave with a playful chenille stripe. Romo include Kaia in Elva, a weighty cloth woven from linen and recycled yarns with a soft slub. Mark Alexander bring linens to Rhythm Fabrics, among them Veldt, with a movement of colour inspired by traditional vegetable dyes, and Polo, a rustic linen strié.
Zinc Textile offer the widest choice. Checkmate includes Pachisi, inspired by Indian Matka silk and handwoven from space-dyed twisted yarns, and the Dieter Vander Velpen Outdoor range has Honorat, an outdoor semi-plain woven from tonal and twisted yarns. Kirkby Design's Underground Vol.III takes its stripes from a 1960s transport moquette.
Step down to plain fabric for complete calm, or up to woven and textured fabric for more surface. Chenille fabric and linen fabric are useful places to narrow the search. Our piece on texture versus pattern explains when to use each.
