Checkerboard Wallpaper

Checkerboard Wallpaper

Checkerboard wallpaper is the simplest pattern there is: two colours, equal squares, nothing else. Scale changes it completely. A large black and white check is graphic and faintly disco, while the same grid in oatmeal or sage behaves almost like a texture. Good in a cloakroom, a utility or a hallway where you want some nerve.

Good to know

How many rolls do I need?

Use the wallpaper calculator, or "How many rolls do I need?" on any product page, which allows for the pattern repeat. Order all your rolls together so they come from the same batch.

Can I order a sample?

Yes. Most papers have a sample, usually A4, and up to 6 samples are delivered free. A sample is the best way to check colour and texture in your own room.

Why does the batch number matter?

Rolls from different production batches can vary slightly in shade. Rolls ordered together always come from one batch; if you're topping up an earlier order, add its batch number on the product page and we'll match it.

Can I return wallpaper?

Most unused rolls can be returned: tell us within 14 days of delivery and send them back within 30. Some brands charge a 25% restocking fee on returns made after 14 days. Papers that are printed or made to order, and murals, can't be returned. Each product page tells you which applies.

How long will delivery take?

Every product page shows its own delivery time and an estimated arrival date. Delivery is free on UK mainland orders over £100; Northern Ireland, the Highlands and islands are charged at checkout.

Do you offer trade accounts?

Yes, for interior designers, decorators and commercial projects. Find out about trade accounts.

Harlequin's Colour 3 collection includes Blocks, a large-scale checkerboard inspired by traditional artisan weave, and Harlequin x Henry Holland's Blenets Check mimics tiles set in a checkerboard formation. Ohpopsi's Revive has Disco Check, where uneven lines and softly textured squares give the grid its rhythm. Sandberg's Essentials includes Ruta, a miniature check in a muted palette that works as a statement or a quiet companion.

Caselio offer the most variety, from Checks in Line Up to a charming goose motif set in a checkerboard in Happy Kids Club. For texture, Mark Alexander's Collage II has Sett, a simple checkerboard in a paperweave.

The checkerboard is a firm favourite of retro wallpaper, and it sits beside gingham wallpaper and houndstooth wallpaper. Tile-inspired versions also suit tiles and slate wallpaper. Our Decorating Notes piece The Look That Keeps Coming Back: The Case for Retro Wallpaper has more ideas.
