Most wallpaper houses are named after their founders. Zoffany is named after a painter, and the choice tells you almost everything about its ambitions. Johan Zoffany, born in 1733, was a German-born artist who made his name in England as court painter to George III and Queen Charlotte and a founding member of the Royal Academy. He is remembered for his society and theatrical portraits and for his so-called conversation pieces, but for our purposes the telling detail is his fascination with interiors: Zoffany recorded the richly furnished rooms of his day in exquisite detail, painted the very treasures that filled them, and, on occasion, painted wallpaper to commission. His masterpiece, a view of the Tribuna of the Uffizi in Florence, is essentially one glorious room crammed with beautiful things.

Born From a Fragment
The company itself began, in the early 1980s, with an act of rescue. Its founding work was the meticulous restoration of historic wallpapers from mere surviving fragments, most famously recreating lost papers for Temple Newsam, one of Yorkshire's great houses. From those beginnings it assembled an archive of seventeenth and eighteenth-century designs that informs its collections to this day.
That heritage matters, because it means Zoffany's refinement is not an affectation but an inheritance. The designs carry the authority of the real thing, historical damasks, trailing botanicals, elegant trompe l'oeil, yet they are reissued for the way we actually live now, which is why the collections read as classically grounded and quietly modern at once.
