How To Measure For Wallpaper

Before you fall in love with a wallpaper, make sure you know how much you’ll need. Here’s a simple guide to measuring your walls, no complicated maths, just straightforward steps.

Option 1: Use our wallpaper calculator

To make life easier, each wallpaper on our site includes a built-in wallpaper calculator on the product page. Just pop in your measurements and it’ll work out how many rolls you need — taking into account things like pattern repeats and design match for you.

Option 2: Measure Manually

STEP 1: Measure your walls

You’ll need the height and width of each wall you’re wallpapering. Use a tape measure and round up to the nearest centimetre.

Don’t worry about windows or doors unless they’re particularly large (like French doors or wide bay windows), smaller openings usually aren’t worth factoring in.

STEP 2: Calculate the total wall area

Multiply the height by the width.

For one wall: 2.4m x 3m = 7.2m²

If you're doing multiple walls, add them together.

STEP 3: Find the coverage of your wallpaper roll

Most standard wallpaper rolls cover about 5.2m², but this can vary depending on the brand, pattern and paper type, so always check the specifications box on each wallpaper page carefully.

You’ll find this coverage info in square metres (m²) on each product page. Not sure? Drop us a message, we're happy to help you figure it out.

STEP 4: Divide wall area by roll coverage

So: 7.2m² ÷ 5.2m² = 1.38 → round up to 2 rolls

Important: If your wallpaper has a pattern repeat, you’ll need extra to account for matching. The larger the repeat, the more waste you'll have.

Here’s a rough rule of thumb:

  • No repeat / random match: No extra needed
  • Small repeat (0–30cm): Add 10%
  • Large repeat (30cm+): Add 20%

Tip: Always round up

It’s better to have a little leftover than run out, especially since wallpaper batches can vary.
